Staying Healthy this Winter

The transition from Fall to Winter is one of my favorite times of the year. The annual traditions, family gatherings, and holiday vibes brings an atmosphere of warmth and peace. With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, I wanted to put together some tips and tricks for staying healthy.

I’ll start by listing the things you can do daily to keep your family healthy this season.

Supplements

Supplements are KEY! And making sure they are good quality is just as important as taking them in general is. When a supplement has essential oils in it, it increases bioavailability! What does that really look like? Supplements without oils: 42% blood absorption in 24 hours. With oils: 64% blood absorption in 30 minutes, 86% in 1 hour. WHAT?!

Daily supplements include Omega-3's (Omegagize), Digestive Enzymes (Allerzyme), Iron (Mineral Essence), Vitamin C (SuperC), and Calcium (Super Cal Plus). Two supplements that I take daily are Life9, a probiotic, as well as multi-greens capsule, to support my glandular, circulatory and nervous systems.

It’s also important to make sure that you are getting enough Vitamin D. We supplement throughout the winter months to combat the lack of sun we get up here in the Northwest.

Diet & Exercise

I do my best to get active at least four times a week. I like to switch up how I exercise so that it stays fun and therefore avoid boredom. That can look anything like a run with my dog, gym date with my hubby, yoga class, or even an at home circuit training workout. Exercise not only improves my physical health, it also helps keep me emotionally balanced.

When it comes to food, the more veggies the better. We don’t follow a strict eating style in our home but I would call our diet “moderate whole 30”. After we did Whole 30 this summer, we realized that we really enjoy that style of eating. Now, we occasionally add in grains or dessert here and there. I’ve learned that life is about balance and it’s okay to indulge in the big moments in life. That being said, it is just as important to be feeding your body with foods that will not only fuel you, but also improve your health and well-being.

Oils, Oils, and more oils

In our home, we basically always have oils going on, in one room or another. We have become huge believers in preventative care. So what does that look like? Having our diffuser going with Thieves, Raven, Frankincense, etc. at all times. I try to always have Thieves going before and after work.

We also use rollerbottles every day. Immunity rollers on the bottoms of our feet and down our spines at night time. I also have a tension/pain roller as well as a roller to support stress relief.

We also use Thieves handsoap, spray, laundry detergent, household cleaner, you name it- it’s Thieves in our home. What better way to boost your immune system then by having all your household items containing it?!

Detox Baths + Elderberry Syrup + Kombucha

Detox baths are a great way to decompress. Soak away the day. I’ve just begun taking one or two a week and I am LOVING how I feel. Here’s a link to read all about the benefits of detox baths.

Elderberry syrup is a new item I’ve begun reading about. I haven’t used it personally (although I’d love to make some homemade elderberry syrup using this DIY recipe here). What are elderberries, you might ask? Elderberries are rich in vitamins A, B, and C and are a traditional cold and flu remedy that has been used for hundreds of years. They are high in antioxidants which help destroy a virus’s ability to inflect our healthy cells.

Finally, Kombucha. Kombucha is great for gut health. So much of our health starts in our gut- so it’s vital that we make it a healthy environment. My husband is a huge kombucha fan. It’s easy to DIY or if you’re in a pinch, buy at the store.

If I feel like I’m coming down with something…

Cut out the crap!

First and foremost, I increase my water intake to help flush toxins out. Staying hydrated is so important! I remove as much dairy, sugar and processed carbs from my diet as possible, and immediately add more vegetables to my diet. I’ll add in an extra green juice here and there- this is a great way to get more veggies if you aren’t a vegetable lover. There are so many combinations to try- I try to find juices with kelp or beets (high in vitamins) and spirulina (anti-inflammatory).

Up the Supplements and Oils

Young Living has some incredible supplements. Inner Defense, SuperC, and ImmuPro are there to help support your immune system to keep you healthy all season long. Inner Defense is best taken with food, as it is a powerful blend of oils that could upset an empty stomach. ImmuPro is something you take about 20-30 minutes before bedtime. It is incredible for boosting your immune system, but also contain Melatonin- so you get a good night’s sleep. Sleep is NEEDED for your body to get better.

I also roll extra oils (Thieves for immunity support and a DIY tension roller for aches and pains), and diffuse non-stop. Young Living has great throat lozenges that contain Thieves essential oil to help clear out the junk in your system. Ningxia Red, another awesome Young Living product, is a juice blend derived from the wolfberry, that is packed with antioxidants to help give you a boost of energy and support a healthy system.

ACV + Thieves Tea

Yep, no joke, ACV- Apple Cider Vinegar is great to help clear out the toxins in your body. It takes completely gross, I know, but the benefits are incredible. Just a tablespoon of ACV in water, two times a day to help fight off those germs!

Recently, I’ve been on a tea kick. Usually something herbal in the evening to help settle my mind and unwind from the day. When the germs are evident in our life or when I feel like I might be getting sick, I like to add a drop of Thieves oil with a tablespoon of honey into my tea. It’s so soothing and effective, plus Thieves adds a subtle spice to the tea.

I hope this helps you! Young Living has changed the game for our health. If you aren’t using them yet – let me help you get going on changing your Winter (and beyond!).
